RSS Newsfeeds (commonly translated as 'Really Simple Syndication') are an ideal way of keeping up to date with the latest news without having to browse to particular sites on a regular basis. The latest news stories and articles are delivered directly to your desktop via a whole range freely downloadable news reader programs. You set your news reader to check the channels you've subscribed to on a regular basis (similar in concept to send/receive settings in Microsoft Outlook).
Many large companies and news organisations use RSS as a method of delivering information to their readers. You may have spotted the common icons on a number of sites such as CNN or the BBC.
They are identified as either an RSS or XML symbol.
These symbols are linked to a page written in XML format which is usually unreadable to a normal browser as it lacks adequate formatting.
The common way to subscribe to a channel is to right click on a symbol, select 'copy shortcut', open your newsreader program, click on the 'add' button and paste the link into the box. The newsreader will then add this channel to your favourites and check for updates on a regular basis.
